Google Video Chat Demonstration

At Reachd we use Google Apps for Your Domain for our email, documents sharing and to create a wiki for our company. We are also a virtual company, working from home, coffee shops, airport lounges, any where there is wireless internet. So we were excited to try out Google’s New Video Chat for Gmail. In the video above, I’m talking with Steve Jagger. Gmail and Google Apps provides a great way to be productive and stay connect with your team.

One real estate agent in Sooke, Tim Ayres, recently gave a presentation on how he uses Gmail to be more productive. Contact Tim and maybe you can get some of his pointers on how he uses Gmail. It is a great tool and free!

Thanks Google for the new Feature.

Eye Tracking On Search Engine Results Page

Above is a video that I grabbed from YouTube. I actually ran across the video as I was reading this post from Google blog. In the Google post one googler was talking about how they do experiments such as eye tracking and field studies to better understand how visitors interact with their search engine. The video is only 42 seconds and moves very fast.

3 Things that I took away from the video and post.

  1. We make decisions online almost subconsciously. Notice how fast the person moves and clicks around. Very little deliberate thought is given to what to click on. Another reason to pay careful attention to your title tag and meta description
  2. In this 42 second video there was no scrolling that took place. Only the top five results matter.
  3. Your website is never completed. You can always be perfecting it and improving it’s performance. If Google is continually trying to improve their page, then we can all certainly do the same.

Are you testing and tweaking? What element of your site are you currently trying to improve?

Just Do It. The Best Way to Start is to Start

After the real estate tech meetup in October the main question that people asked after the meetup was, “So what’s the first step? What should I do to get started?” The answer to that question according to Steve Jagger is, “Just get started!” Pick something, Twitter, Facebook, Blogging and do something with it. There will be frustrations at first but you can work through those frustrations. You probably don’t know everything you need to know about blogging, but take what you do know and put it into practice.

Three simple words of advice - “Just Do It”
Not - “Do it Just right”
Not - “Do it perfectly”
But “Just Do It” - Take action on the things that you do know and don’t worry right now about the things you don’t know.

Use Clicktale as a Supplemental Analytics Tool

Web analytics can get a bit dry and boring. You might be a business owner and not a number cruncher so you don’t want to spend hours sifting through reports. What if you could get a piece of your analytics delivered as a movie. You can! - with a tool called ClickTale. ClickTale will actually capture movies of what your visitors are doing on your site. There is a free and paid version of the tool. Watch this short video for a quick demo of clicktale.

Don’t Wait for Inspiration to Start Blogging

Web marketing does not happen by accident. One of the key tools that you have for your internet marketing endeavors is your calendar. Tools and techniques are obviously important but if you don’t set aside regular time to blog, or work on Adwords or look at your analytics then it will not happen. As a business owner you are swamped with other things and must be proactive in setting aside time to Blog, Twitter, connect on Facebook etc. So pull out your calendar and make an appointment with your analytics or with Google Adwords or your blog and start being intentional about improving your web marketing plan.

One person in our recent training told a story of how she spent 15 minutes blogging and it translated into several thousand dollars in revenue. This “stuff” works, it just requires your intentional effort.

If there is any way that I can help you put together your weekly plan feel free to email me or leave a comment here.

Internet Marketing in a Smaller Pond

When you are marketing yourself online often, you are competing with a large number of other sites. How can you make your voice be heard in the crowd? One idea is to find your niche. When you focus on a specific niche, the amount of traffic that you receive may be lower but you will be targeting a more specific customer. A customer who is looking for a niche product or service already knows what they want, you simply need to convince them to do business with you. Also by focusing on a specific niche you will eliminate some of your competition. Here’s a quick video which talks briefly about why to focus on a niche.

Is My Domain Name Blacklisted for Spam?

First let me say, I’m not a spammer. We are a legitimate business offering a legitimate service to people. We offer training about internet marketing issues like seo, blogging, adwords, video etc. Recently I got wind that some of our email was ending up the in spam box of some people. This could be a big problem for a company that relies heavily on email communication.

I sent out and email or two today to people, but got no response. I thought I would go with the old fashion method and pick up the phone. So I called our client’s office and said… “Hey did you get my email? I’ve been having some trouble with email lately and wanted to double check.”

To which the client responded, “No, but let me check the spam filter maybe it is in there.” I held my breathe and waited hoping that it was not in the spam box. She came back online, and said, “Yes I just checked spam arrest and it is in there.”

My heart sort of sank.. “Oh no - all my email are getting ignored!” “No one is listening to me!” “What can I do?”

The client I spoke to gave me a clue. They use spam arrest, so I went to spam arrest’s website to check it out and see if there was anything I could do to solve the problem.

Here’s the funny part.. Spam Arrest uses a system which sends an automatic reply to anyone that emails you who is not on your contact list.

The email looks like this…

So if I email mary@marysmith.com for the first time and she is using spam arrest, I would get an email that looks something like the one above.

Here is the kicker.. Guess where the email from Spam Arrest sent to me to “verify” my email address ended up? You guessed it. In my spam box. Nice. So their spam box was having a conversation with my spam box!

Why is this a problem? Okay lets say someone wants to buy something from you or is interested in your service, but they have never contacted you before. Their email address is not in your “contact list” so they email and go in your spam box and then their spam filter emails out a verification email which ends up in the spam box again. Definitely not a good scenario.

What could you do to fix this?
One Idea - rather than relying on email for people to contact you - invite them to comment on your blog. This provides multiple channels for communication and if the email does not get through, they could at least contact you via your blog.

Of course the phone works as well, but at midnight, I would rather someone comment on my blog or submit a form on my website rather than calling me.

I am continuing to dig into the email spam issue and would welcome your comments. If you think your site is blacklisted and you are not too ashamed to let the world know, then lets talk about it here. Maybe we can help each other get back into the good graces of the ISP’s of the world.
